UNandUP Intern Spotlight: Meet MaryAnn Romagna
As we approach the end of another exciting summer at UNandUP, we're proud to spotlight one of our returning interns, MaryAnn Romagna. Since first joining UNandUP in January 2026, MaryAnn has become a valued member of our Nanoparticle Team. Her curiosity, dedication, and steady growth have made her an important contributor to our research, and we're grateful for the impact she has made throughout her internship.
A recent chemistry graduate from McKendree University, MaryAnn has long been passionate about the intersection of science, medicine, and healthcare innovation. During her time at McKendree, she gained research experience in immune cell differentiation at Washington University in St. Louis and demonstrated a strong commitment to service leadership as the founder and president of McKendree MEDLIFE, a pre-medical organization that partners with mobile medical clinics serving communities in Latin America. As she prepares to apply to medical school, MaryAnn continues to build on her passion for improving patient care through scientific discovery and innovation.
In this spotlight, MaryAnn shares what inspired her interest in healthcare innovation, her experience at UNandUP, and what's next on her journey.
Tell us about yourself. What are you studying, and what sparked your interest in your medical technology and healthcare innovation?
I recently graduated from McKendree University with a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, and I am currently applying to medical school. My interest in medical technology and healthcare innovation comes from wanting to understand how science can be used to improve patient care.
What drew you to UNandUP and this internship opportunity?
I was drawn to UNandUP because it was different from the experiences I have had before. I have worked in a research lab and as a CNA in patient care, but it is sometimes hard to see the direct translation between research and how it affects patients. The work we do at UNandUP has a clear connection to its potential to impact patients and I have really enjoyed that.
What project, technology, or area of research are you most interested in exploring during your internship?
I have been most interested in learning about nanoparticle-based therapies and how chemistry can be used to improve drug delivery. I have enjoyed using the skills I learned during my chemistry degree in a real lab setting, especially while helping with synthesis, coating, testing, and protocol development.
What skills or experiences do you hope to gain this summer?
This summer, I hope to keep building my lab skills and become more confident working through problems independently. I also want to learn more about what working at a start up looks like.
What is one accomplishment, project, or experience you are particularly proud of?
I am proud of the progress I have made as an intern since starting in January 2026. This summer, I have been able to take on more responsibility in the lab and contribute more independently to projects. It has been rewarding to see myself grow from learning the basics of the work to being trusted with more of the process.
What is something people might be surprised to learn about you outside of academics or work?
Outside of academics and work, I am a competitive powerlifter. My best deadlift is 430 pounds, and I was also a captain of my college powerlifting team.
What are your goals after graduation?
After graduation, I am taking a gap year while applying to medical school.
